Beauty Point - North East, Tasmania.

Beauty Point is the largest and oldest deep-water port on the Tamar, built to support the gold mining industry at nearby Beaconsfield.  When the gold ran out it became a centre for the export of the local apple crop.

A major fishing town, Beauty Point lies in the heart of a rich farming and wine growing district but the port facilities are the primary feature of the town.  It’s also home to the main campus of the Australian Maritime College with facilities for about 100 live-in students.

In 1996 Beauty Point was chosen as the sight for Seahorse World, a commercial breeding and research facility dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the seahorse.  It has since developed into a unique tourist attraction giving visitors a fascinating insight into these amazing creatures.

The $1.2 million development consists of the Cave Of The Seahorse exhibit, a working seahorse farm and an aquarium featuring Tasmanian native fish and marine species and incorporating a “touch-pool” for children.

Belying its natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle Beauty Point is also the starting point for the Australian Three Peaks Race, a grueling marathon conducted annually over the Easter long-weekend. Runners are transported by yacht to Flinders Island where two team members head to the top of Mount Strezlecki, a 65 kilometre run and 750 metre ascent. Back on the yacht and transported to Coles Bay on the east coast of Tasmania, two more runners scale Mount Freycinet, a distance of 33 kilometres and an ascent of 620 metresThe final leg sees teams head back to Hobart where another two team members ascend Mount Wellington, running 33 kilometres and climbing 1270 metres, eventually finishing in the city centre.

In all competitors sail 335 nautical miles, run 131 kilometres and ascend a total of 2646 metres.
