Bruny Island - Huon Valley, Tasmania .

Bruny Island is in fact two islands, North and South, joined by a narrow isthmus known as “The Neck”.  Today a road runs the length of the isthmus.  It was constructed in 1950 but prior to that the only access between the two was via the Neck beach at low tide.

The two islands are as different as chalk and cheese.  South Bruny is the more heavily timbered of the two and contains large tracts of rain forest.  North Bruny consists of more pasture land interspersed with light bush and is much drier than the South.

It is thought that Abel Tasman attempted to land on Bruny Island as early as 1642 while others including James Cook and Admiral Bruni D’Entrecasteaux, the man ultimately credited with discovering the region, visited throughout the 1770’s.  William Bligh was another.  He landed at Adventure Bay in 1788 to take on fresh water and provisions before setting off on his pacific voyage which ended in the infamous mutiny.  He ultimately visited Adventure Bay a total of four times and is credited with planting the first apple tree and grape-vine in Tasmania.

Just a fifteen minute ferry ride from Kettering and right on Hobart’s doorstep, Bruny Island offers outstanding accommodation options, great food & produce and premium wines all in a near pristine natural environment.  What more could you ask for?

Certainly it is a markedly different place to that which Cook, Bligh, D’Entrecasteaux and the early settlers knew.

You might spare them a thought as you relax in your quality accommodation, enjoy a glass or two of magnificent local wine and sate your appetite with the freshest of fresh seafood.
